In Italy, La Befana, the Christmas witch is one of the best known characters and a favourite of children.  Traditionally, it's La Befana who brings gifts, candy or lumps of coal to put in the children's stockings - not on Christmas Day, but on the eve of Epiphany.  Legend has it that she met the three wise men, who on their way to visit the baby Jesus, asked her for directions.
