Embracing Neurocomplexity: Some of My Strengths

In a world that often focuses on deficits and challenges, I want to share some of the strengths that come with my neurocomplex mind. My neurodivergence includes AuDHD (Autism and ADHD),
2e giftedness, mirror touch synesthaesia and heightened existential awareness (plus a few more I could add)—a combination that shapes how I experience and interact with the world in ways that I've come to deeply value.

Creative and Innovative Thinking: Where Imagination Meets Reality
The AuDHD mind doesn't just think outside the box—it often doesn't see the box at all. This neurotype excels at making unexpected connections, seeing patterns others miss, and approaching problems from entirely novel angles.
Take the story of needing jeans for Girl Guides camp. When faced with homemade jeans that were, frankly, "almost clown-shaped with a side zipper and elasticated waist," the solution wasn't to accept disappointment or give up on camp. Instead, it was to see possibility where others might see disaster. While the family went shopping, those jeans were completely deconstructed, reimagined, and rebuilt—borrowing design elements from a father's trousers to create a proper fly zipper, adding belt tabs when there wasn't enough fabric for a waistband, and later extending the length with printed denim as growth demanded. What started as unwearable became years of favorite jeans through pure innovative thinking and hands-on problem-solving.

This creative thinking isn't just about artistic pursuits. It's about reimagining solutions, finding new uses for existing resources, and constantly asking "What if we tried it this way instead?" The combination of autistic attention to detail with ADHD's divergent thinking, enhanced by 2e giftedness, creates a powerful capacity for innovation.

Deep Empathy and Emotional Insights: Feeling the World More Intensely
Contrary to outdated stereotypes, many people with AuDHD possess profound emotional intelligence and empathy. While they might express it differently than neurotypical individuals, their emotional awareness often runs incredibly deep.

This emotional intensity can be so profound that the boundaries between self and others can blur—feeling others' emotions so deeply that distinguishing between your own feelings and theirs becomes a real challenge. While this might seem overwhelming, it's actually a remarkable gift that translates into extraordinary therapeutic ability. This deep emotional resonance became the foundation of years of healing practice, where the ability to truly understand and feel what clients were experiencing allowed for profound connection and guidance. When you can feel someone's pain as if it were your own, you can help them navigate through it with a level of understanding that goes far beyond textbook knowledge.
This heightened emotional sensitivity allows them to:
  • Pick up on subtle emotional cues others might miss
  • Offer unique perspectives on human behavior and motivation
  • Create meaningful connections with others who feel misunderstood
  • Advocate passionately for causes they believe in

Resilience and Perseverance: Strength Forged Through Challenge
Living with a neurocomplex mind in a neurotypical world requires developing extraordinary resilience. Every day brings the challenge of navigating systems not designed for different ways of thinking and processing.
When the neurocomplex mind sets its sights on something, giving up simply isn't in the vocabulary. This isn't just stubbornness—it's a deep-seated drive to see things through until they're healed, finalized, or fully understood. This relentless persistence has been the driving force behind building an art and illustration practice from scratch, establishing a bellydance school, and countless other achievements that required pushing through obstacles that might have stopped others.

Perhaps even more significantly, this perseverance becomes a lifeline when facing chronic health challenges like fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, and arthritis from the twenties onward. While others might see these conditions as limitations, the neurocomplex mind approaches them as puzzles to solve, systems to understand, and challenges to navigate. The same determination that drives creative projects becomes the foundation for developing coping strategies, finding treatments, and refusing to let chronic illness define the boundaries of what's possible.
This resilience manifests as:
  • The ability to bounce back from setbacks stronger than before
  • Creative problem-solving when faced with barriers
  • A deep understanding of struggle that translates to compassion for others
  • The development of unique coping strategies that can benefit everyone

Hyperfocus and Attention to Detail: When Interest Becomes Superpower
While ADHD is often associated with distractibility, the hyperfocus aspect is equally powerful. Combined with autistic attention to detail, this creates an ability to dive deep into subjects with laser-like precision.
The ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects while maintaining exquisite attention to detail is where the neurocomplex mind truly shines. Running an art and bookbinding business alongside illustration work and farm responsibilities requires a unique cognitive flexibility—the capacity to hyperfocus on intricate bookbinding techniques one moment, then shift to the broader vision of an illustration project, all while keeping track of farm operations.

This isn't the same as being able to switch tasks on demand when others require it—that kind of external interruption can actually be jarring and counterproductive. Instead, it's about having an internal rhythm and flow between projects, moving between them when it feels natural and right. This self-directed multifocus means that no detail gets lost, yet the bigger picture never becomes obscured. The ability to see both the forest and the trees simultaneously, but on your own terms, creates a depth of engagement that external task-switching simply cannot match.

This combination allows for:
  • Becoming an expert in areas of special interest
  • Noticing details and patterns that others overlook
  • Producing work of exceptional quality and thoroughness
  • Making connections between seemingly unrelated concepts

Deep Diving into Information and Knowledge: The Insatiable Curiosity
Perhaps one of the most defining characteristics of the neurocomplex mind is an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and understanding. This isn't casual interest—it's a driving force that compels deep exploration of subjects that capture attention. The ability to absorb information continuously, to question everything without fear, and to remain open to the flow of new knowledge creates a flexible, ever-expanding understanding of the world.

This intellectual courage means never being trapped by rigid thinking. Instead, there's a willingness to challenge assumptions, explore new perspectives, and integrate seemingly contradictory information into a more nuanced understanding. It's not about being right—it's about being open to learning and growing, constantly.

Heightened Existential Awareness: Connected to Something Greater
From the earliest memories—before age six—there have been profound questions: Why am I here? What am I meant to be doing with my life? How do I fit everything I want to accomplish into the brief time we have on earth? While other children might ask these questions occasionally, for the neurocomplex mind, they become a constant undercurrent of awareness.

This heightened existential consciousness creates a deep connection to "all that is"—a sense of being part of something far greater than individual existence. This spiritual awareness isn't just philosophical musing; it becomes a source of strength that can carry you through the darkest times. When early life brings trauma and challenge, this connection to the universal becomes an anchor, a reminder that there's purpose and meaning even in the midst of pain.

Honest and Direct Communication: Authenticity in an Artificial World
In a world often clouded by social pretence, the AuDHD communication style brings refreshing honesty and directness. This isn't about being rude or insensitive—it's about valuing truth and authenticity above social convention.
While direct communication can occasionally ruffle feathers in a world that often prefers polite deflection, saying exactly what you mean creates profound trust and clarity. This authenticity becomes a superpower in teaching environments—whether leading art workshops, delivering wellbeing lectures, or working with individuals with ADHD and Asperger's. Students and clients know they're getting genuine insight rather than sugar-coated platitudes. There's something deeply reassuring about working with someone who will tell you the truth, even when it's not what you want to hear, because you know their praise and encouragement are equally genuine.
This communication style offers:
  • Clear, unambiguous expression of thoughts and needs
  • The courage to address difficult topics others might avoid
  • Authentic relationships built on genuine connection rather than pretense
  • The ability to cut through confusion and get to the heart of matters

Moving Forward: Celebrating Difference
These strengths don't exist in isolation—they combine and amplify each other, creating individuals who can see what others cannot, persist where others give up, and create solutions that benefit everyone.
Your challenges are real, and they deserve acknowledgment and support. But your strengths are equally real, and they deserve celebration and recognition. You're not broken—you're beautifully, powerfully different.
Society benefits when we recognize and nurture neurocomplex minds rather than trying to force them into neurotypical molds. By celebrating these strengths, we create a world where everyone can thrive and contribute their unique gifts.

This is the first in a series exploring the strengths and experiences of neurocomplex minds. What aspects of neurodivergence would you like to explore next?
